Tenalji von Fersen

In early August, Riikka and Antti got married at Tenalji von Fersen in Suomenlinna. The preparation took place in Hotel Haven and the beautiful ceremony in St. John’s Church.

For photographers: I’ve now shot a few weddings with the new Canon 5D MKIII, and I’ve been surprised at how much better I can shoot different scenes. I can react slightly better thanks to the faster focusing, and because the camera is quieter, people pay less attention to the fact that they are being photographed. For the same reason I only use flash when I absolutely need to – people do notice it immediately. It can be very annoying, both for the couple and the guests, if the light flashes hundreds or thousands of times during the day. I think it’s important that taking photos does not attract any extra attention in the wedding.

The beautiful wedding ceremony of Juuli and Juhana was held at the Suomenlinna Church, and the reception at Tenalji von Fersen. Juuli and Juhana are both musicians, so music and food had extra emphasis in their wedding. I’ve never been in a wedding with this many musical performances before.

With the music, the ceremony was twice as long as it usually is, and the reception had hours of beautiful and touching performances, with various band compositions playing the flute, violin, piano and cello. Ballet and opera singing was included as well.

From a photographer’s point of view, food usually isn’t a memorable part of the wedding since there’s not much time to focus on it. But I’ll have to comment that the wedding meal by restaurant Juuri was extraordinarily good.

For photographers: this was the first time I used a pair of Canon 5D Mark IIIs in a wedding. Many are asking if they’re notably different from the previous model, and I must say the difference is huge. Automatic focus and exposure are way ahead of the earlier 5D. I used to shoot with the manual (M) mode only, but now used the aperture (Av) mode and auto ISO throughout most of the wedding.

Because of the improved sensitivity of the body, I could shoot the entire wedding with just one zoom lens (24–70mm 2.8L), except for the ceremony where I also used the 135mm 2.0L. With the new camera I spent less time tweaking the settings and more time taking photos. I had no problem using ISO 12800 sensitivity, whereas with the older 5D I almost always stayed below ISO6400 when using a zoom lens.

The third major difference in the new 5D is the support for two memory cards. Actually, I’ve never had a card break on me, but anyway it’s a risk that I can now stop worrying about, as the photos are saved on two separate cards.

My summer season started with Linda’s and Jani’s lovely wedding in Tenalji von Fersen in Suomenlinna, ceremony was held in Suomenlinnan Church. It was pleasure working around familiar people as I had shot best man’s wedding early in my career and I had met many of the guests on other weddings where I have worked quite many times.

Despite I haven’t basically touched the camera for couple months, it was awesome feeling to get back on something I just love to do. As I’m working on very limited amount of weddings during this and next year, I’ll post bit more images from the weddings than before from now on and these are my faves from the day.

Being sick is probably the worst case scenario for a wedding photographer, especially during the summer season when it’s pretty much impossible to get a decent substitute photographer, but this was an even bigger problem for me. This wedding was on Friday, I had another wedding also on Saturday – and my own wedding in Sunday!

I was suffering from meningitis, which made it pretty difficult to just stand up. I went to a doctor and got heavy medication so I was able to work in the wedding. I have worked while sick a couple of times earlier, but this was my heaviest wedding ever. But even with the difficult circumstances everything went really smoothly.

Aysu and James were married in Suomenlinna and had their reception in Tenalji von Fersen. Like the other venues where I have worked during this summer, it was pretty dark. It was like working during the wintertime, working with the primes while pushing the camera equipment up to the limits.

These are my faves from the day.
